Iranian President: ‘World Powers Surrendered to Iranian Nation’s Will’

 

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s English twitter account said Tuesday morning that “world powers surrendered to Iranian nation’s will” in the agreement to ease economic sanctions on the country if it drops its nuclear ambitions.

Beginning on Jan. 20, the U.S. and the EU are providing a $7 billion sanctions relief package, including $4.2 billion in oil revenue that has been frozen in offshore accounts. Iran will in turn stop producing nuclear weapons grade fuel, and cap its production of lower-enriched uranium. Iran will further halt plans for plutonium production and agree to enhanced inspections by the international community.

“Our relationship w/ the world is based on Iranian nation’s interests. In ‪#Geneva agreement world powers surrendered to Iranian nation’s will,” Rouhani’s English twitter account, which has 166,555 followers, said at 6:36 a.m.

He sent an 8:05 a.m. tweet that said, ‪”#Geneva Agreement:Global recognition of Iran’s ‪#peaceful technology& lifting sanctions agst ‪#peace-loving ppl of Iran ‪pic.twitter.com/vUSY4vAuTZ”

An 8:26 a.m. tweet touted the economic boost for Iran that could come come from the agreement.

“New projects & investment will start in ‪#Khuzestan province in the coming months to reduce unemployment, inequality & save the ‪#environment,” it said.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Tuesday that such comments are to be expected because the Iranian leader must sell the deal to the people of his country.

There is also significant distrust of Iran in the U.S., as 59 senators, 16 of them Democrats, co-sponsor a bill to impose tougher economic sanctions on Iran now and not wait for six months. It’s not likely that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will allow the bill to come to the floor for a vote.

On Monday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Iran knows there will be consequences if it does not abide by its agreement to cease production of weapons-grade nuclear energy.
