What a Man Who Apparently Hasn’t Bathed in 60 Years Looks Like

Iranian media are claiming that an 80-year-old man has broken the world record for the number of years he has let elapse since he last bathed himself.

The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) and the Tehran Times reported that one Amou Haji of southern Iran has not bathed for 60 years.

The Tehran Times described Haji as a sort of recluse who took to the countryside after experiencing “emotional setbacks” as a young man.

According to the paper, Haji believes cleanliness brings on illness, and therefore avoids showers at all cost.

More details of Haji’s unorthodox lifestyle include eating rotten meat, especially porcupine meat, and drinking dirty water. TheBlaze cannot verify details of the story, but the Tehran Times explains:

His smoking pipe is filled with animal’s feces instead of tobacco and when he feels like smoking cigarettes he lights up a few of them at a time.

He wears a war helmet not to fight off the enemy in the battle field but to keep away from the bitterly cold winters.

Amou Haji has a couple of places to live in: one is a hole in the ground resembling a grave to keep him grounded and in touch with the reality of life and the other is an open brick shack built by those who felt sorry for him.

The English-language paper wrote that despite his challenging life, Haji might be “luckier than many of us.”

“His roof is the starred sky, his little shack is paid in full without worrying about monthly mortgages, his pillow and quilt is the soft cushion of the earth embracing him every time,” it wrote.

“He has no fear of getting rubbed [sic] at nights because he has built no possessions. He feels happy despite having no belongings and maybe that is exactly why he is joyful,” the Tehran Times added.

Another recent case of a man spending years without cleaning himself was found last year in India, though Guinness reportedly won’t offer an award in that category.

Last year, media reports described Kailash Singh, 66, who had not showered for 38 years, an achievement all the more notable as his job was working with cattle under the hot Indian sun.
